2021 Visual Artist: Jae Sterling on inspiration, mythology

Projects like this make it clear that I can still put my younger imagination to work.

I was excited to take on this really rare opportunity in my line of work. That is, to work on a project that deliberately forces your mind back to nature. I realized over time, people here were always drawn back to how beautiful the Alberta sky is, so I wanted to tell them I was looking too and what I saw up there sometimes.

Illustrating the characters are what flows the easiest out of me. I am a story teller and sometimes when you say this about your art people get confused and think that all these stories have to be about reality or its not powerful art. While I do believe a lot of powerful art is based in realism, those are not the reasons why I picked up the pencil to draw as a kid. I did it because I wanted to draw cool and daring images. Projects like this make it clear that I can still put my younger imagination to work.

Mythology is everything. Coming from my background, there are a lot of stories that latch on to you at birth, so true innovation, reimagining myself, was born more out of necessity than just curiosity. My island is full of mythological creatures and I have a great time connecting the dots in those parables. A touch of Mythology always lends it self beautifully to poetry and paintings. So I will always borrow from it and create some myths of my own.
