LIVE MUSIC IS COMING BACK TO THE ISLAND!
After months of careful planning, we’re excited to announce CFMF’s Summer Serenades, presented by ATB. Summer Serenades will run from July 22-28, 2021, and we need volunteers to help bring live music back to Prince’s Island Park!
The CFMF Volunteer Program is proudly powered by ENMAX.

The Calgary Folk Music Festival was founded in 1980 and is produced by the not-for-profit Folk Festival Society of Calgary. Held at Calgary's bucolic Prince’s Island Park since its inception, it’s one of Canada’s flagship, trailblazing music festivals with a national and international profile and a broad, cutting-edge programming vision.
This year, our 42nd annual event will look very different. Rather than a multi-staged festival, we’re producing an outdoor concert series, CFMF’s Summer Serenades, presented by ATB.
Music lovers will come together while staying safely apart at this grassroots community gathering (15% capacity compared to past years), featuring a diverse collection of Canadian artists on the Main Stage.
Staff have been working closely with The City of Calgary and Alberta Health Services (AHS) to ensure everyone follows COVID-19 protocols. Sanitation will be increased, physical distancing will be in place, and masks will be mandatory.
Volunteers who participated at the Calgary Folk Music Festival in 2018 or 2019 have already been contacted regarding volunteer opportunities. Keep an eye on your inbox for more info!
CFMF’s Summer Serenades Volunteer Program is now accepting waitlist applicants. Click here for registration instructions.
The health and safety of our community is our top priority. Please consult our COVID-19 Protocols for more information.
Regarding the volunteer program, the CFMF’s COVID-19 Safety Planning Consultant will be working collaboratively with Crew Coordinators to prepare protocols specific to each crew’s needs and work environments.
Vaccination against COVID-19 is not mandatory to participate in CFMF’s Summer Serenades. However, we encourage everyone to get their vaccines against COVID-19 if it is right for their health and circumstances.
We have volunteer opportunities for folks 13+. Be sure to check the crew's minimum age requirement and submit a youth permission form before you request to join.
This year, each frontline volunteer must work 3 shifts over the course of the event. The length of each shift varies by crew, but will be approximately 6-8 hours long.
Duties will vary from crew to crew. When you are invited to choose a crew, you can read a general overview to see what to expect. After you are accepted on a crew, your Crew Coordinator will go over duties and expectations in more detail.

When you look at the list of orientation dates, you can choose the option ‘I am unable to attend an orientation’ option. Click on that, and we’ll contact you!
All orientations are held digitally via Zoom webinar. Registrants will receive a private webinar link to join the session.
After attending an orientation session, you will be given instructions on how to request a crew when the portal opens. Depending on the crew's requirements, you may have to undergo an interview, certification, or training before you are accepted.
There will be no package pick-up at Festival Hall. All packages can be picked up on-Island at the beginning of your first shift.
Once you are accepted on a crew, your main point of contact will be your Crew Coordinator. If you have questions before you are placed on a crew, or can't get a hold of your Crew Coordinator, you can contact our Volunteer Services Team via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Folk Festival Society of Calgary (FFSC) has gone from a humble summer Festival in July to a well-established organization that hosts engaging musical programming throughout the year. Starting in 2016, the FFSC added another component to its resume: Block Heater.
Block Heater has broadened Calgarians’ musical horizons during the winter months. Held in the city's historic Inglewood and East Village neighbourhoods at Festival Hall, Studio Bell (home of the National Music Centre), King Eddy, and the Central Library, Block Heater is an immersive, veritable festival-in-a-box. Over three days, more than thirty Albertan, Canadian and international roots, blues, world and indie artists — stellar instrumentalists and songwriters who represent fresh and singular approaches to art and culture — are programmed in concerts and collaborative sessions. Every year this festival gets bigger and better, it’s Calgary's cure for cabin fever!
2021 saw Block Heater pivot to a digital format, bringing music to the masses with 23 artists over two stages.
We are not currently accepting applications for the Block Heater Volunteer Program. We will provide an update on 2022 BH volunteer opportunities in fall 2021.
With the CFMF's building, Festival Hall, we are thrilled to be able to present the diverse indie, roots, traditional, and world music the Festival is known for, all year round. We rely on the support of our volunteers to help us run a variety of events throughout the year. Recruiting from our loyal CFMF volunteers, the Festival Hall Volunteer Program operates with over 50 people on our mailing list.
We are not currently accepting applications for the FH Volunteer Program.
Current FH Volunteers will be contacted with season updates and volunteer opportunities as they arise.
We are not currently confirming volunteer intentions at this time.
