U.S. Girls

“These dashboard memories” breathes Megan Remy on the opening track ‘Only Daedelus’ from her latest album Bless This Mess, and dashboard memories are an ideal description of the album. Recalling late '70s/early '80s AM radio that soundtracked cross-country road trips, her latest is the new chapter in a musical book she began writing in 2008. Emerging to critical acclaim early in her career, Remy has continued to grow, confound and entice through her unique interpretations of the sounds and music she finds herself preoccupied with. Seemingly eager to re-invent herself with each release in her extensive catalogue, the throughline of intimate lyricism and minimalist hooks has grown with each album she has dropped. Her latest offers a bedroom sound that transcends its apparent limitations – layered vocals float over retro drum machine programming and funky synths with deceivingly slinky hooks. The album is distinctively retro to those old enough to know better, but forward looking in both style and content for those young enough to try. Singular in her vision and voice, Remy offers a textured response to pop music, futurism R&B and indie rock, granting listeners and audiences an experience that references times both electro-nostalgic while remaining decidedly of this moment. Start the disco ball spinning, pull out the neon, and have a good time.
